Louis Dofsman was born in 1918 in Manhattan, New York. Dorfsmans father Samuel and his mother Molly, were both Polish immigrants, soon after Louis was born his they relocated to the Bronx. There he attended Roosevelt High School and graduated in1935. Dofsman then moved on to study art and design at Cooper Union his second choice to New York University. Unfortunately he was unable to attend New York University because he could not afford the tuition. He graduated in from Cooper Union in 1939 and was a part of the board of directors there after. Dorfsman then moved on to serve in World War II in the United States Army. In the army he was able to use his artistic abilities. He placed both in first and second place for an army poster contest. Dorfsman work numerous graphic design jobs before starting at CBS at the end of the war.
Lou Dofsman began working for Columbia Broadcasting System also known as CBS in 1946 as an art director for its radio networks. Columbia Broadcasting System already had a notable network that was at the top of the ratings. Dofsman’s design’s stood out because of simple slogans and illustrations that caused audiences to look twice. His technique was very different from those at the time.
Dorfsman’s talent and hard work lead him to get the title of senior vice president and creative director for marketing communications and design. He had complete control over advertisements and his designs were attributed with bringing countless new viewers to Columbia Broadcasting System’s news and entertainment programs. Louis Dofsman said "Creativity is essentially a lonely art. An even lonelier struggle, to some a blessing. To others a curse. It is in reality the ability to reach inside yourself and drag forth from your very soul an idea."
One of Louis’s most notable works is his ad for “Of Black America,” the first network series on black history. This full page advertisement depicted a black man in black and white, with his face painted with the stars and stripes of the United States flag.
Dofsman not only worked on advertisements he also did set design and over saw the building of CBS headquarters working closely with the architect.
Mr. Dorfsman was one of the best graphic designers of his time because of this he received many major design honors. He was given honorary doctorates to The New School for Social Research and Long Island University for the fine arts. He inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame and received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
Louis Dorfsman died in October 22, 2008 from congestive heart failure at the age of 90 years old. He worked for CBS for forty five years. Louis Dorfsman was by far the most influential designer at Columbia Broadcasting System. Dorfsman’s talent and hard work lead him to great success. Louis’s notable works and advertisement will always be remembered. Dofsman was a great designer of him time that will never be replaced.
